“For Good, For Whittemore, For Ever”
The Don J. Whittemore Endowment Fund is a permanent resource dedicated to the long-term well-being of our community. Established on May 6, 2009, and named in honor of railroad engineer Don J. Whittemore, the fund ensures that the generosity of our residents continues to benefit Whittemore for generations to come.
How the Fund Works
The fund is an endowment, meaning the principal donations are kept intact and invested. Only the annual earnings from these investments are granted out each year. This structure allows the fund to grow over time while providing a steady stream of support for local projects.
Impact to Date:
Since the first grant cycle in 2014, the fund has awarded more than $105,919.32 to local organizations. Past and most recent projects include:
Public Safety: New ECG code Simulator for Cardiac Training for Whittemore EMS. New tanker pumper trucks, breathing apparatuses (SCBAs), rescue tools, pump & hose replacement, and other water equipment for the Fire Department.
Community Spaces: The gazebo at Noah’s Park as well as landscaping around it. The blue shade shelters at the Whittemore Swimming Pool.
Youth & Community: Support for Little League programs, Seely-Walsh Post 425 received funds for a new sliding door cooler as well as funds to apply tin cover for the roof. The Community Center has also been awarded funds for updating/renovating kitchen area and basement restrooms.
